Nat'l highway Beautification Act of 1972

(943 Reads)
Ladies & Gentlemen: Here's something very clever from Mike Winkler that should brighten your day! Glenn Schleede

All; I recently asked the Wisconsin DOT to look into the fact the wind towers that advertise an energy company or a renewable program (with slogans or the like) along highways could be a possible violation of the Highway Act of 1972. This Act prohibits the placement of signage in places not zoned for commercial uses, so that the areas adjacent to highways remain in their original state. WE Energies operates two towers on Highway 41 in Fond du Lac County. The DOT has agreed that these are illegal signage and they have sent a letter to WE instructing them that the signs (the towers) are noncompliant and they must be painted over. Wisconsin enforces this Act because the federal govt. can withhold highway dollars if they find it has not been enforced. A small victory, but one that at least could have some ramifications for other wind development around the country.
