Lyman Citizens for Protection of the Gardner Mountains

About Us

We are practical conservationists, and very much agree with the idea of distributed, independent, self-sustaining power sources like personal windmills, solar, etc. But we also recognize that the development of huge industrial wind plants covering New England ridgelines is a big mistake. The technology just isn't efficient, and we shouldn't sacrifice the State's best assets on a taxpayer subsidized bet. Let someone else be the guinea pigs. If wind turns out to be a great energy source, we can always blast out our mountain tops some time in the future. As it is, NH has an energy surplus (gas, Seabrook, biomass, coal and hydro being the primary producers). And the NH Dept of Energy and Planning estimates that miles of potential windmills would reduce CO2 emissions by a mere 0.06%

Organize

The Lyman Citizens for Protection of the Gardner Mountains was formed in July, 2004 in response to the unsolicited proposal by UPC Wind Partners to build a large wind turbine facility along 2+ miles of the defining Gardner Mountains ridge in rural Lyman, New Hampshire.

Communicate

The primary purpose of this site is to share details and announcements of our ongoing fight against UPC, with members of the group and the community at large.

Advocate

Meanwhile, our concerns have moved far beyond NIMBY (not in my backyard). We won't pretend to give a balanced view on this site. You can get plenty of pro-wind propoganda elsewhere. We're here to show that as you dig into this industry, you uncover layer upon layer of false statistics, blind "political correctness", financial lobbying and tax incentives, and patronizing promises, some of us feel a moral obligation to expose this industry for what it is: inefficient, unsound, and not especially friendly to the environment.

Educate

This website has evolved into a general library of wind-power industry related information. The more we learn, the more it is crucial that we share this information with others. After all, wind power advocates are well funded, financially motivated, and have an intense ongoing PR campaign (did you see their TV ads during the 2004 summer Olympics?), for better or worse.

Thank you for visiting.
